Srinagar, Dec 29: Government of India on Tuesday sought public comments on a proposed move to make airbags mandatory for the front passenger in all the cars from next year.
Till now car manufacturers in the country were required to provide an airbag for the driver seat only.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), in a statement, said all new car models will have to meet the new guidelines from April 1 and existing models from June 1, if the proposal is approved.
The MORTH asked for public comments and suggestion via email within 30 days from December 28, before the rule is implemented.
The move could see raise in the cost of manufactures, ultimately increasing car prices in the country, auto sector experts believe.
The Indian auto sector, which went through a sluggish sales period, is slowly witnessing some increase in demand.
However, the safety of passengers has been a concern for a long time.
