20K clonal walnut rootstock ready for grafting in Tral nursery

Srinagar, Sept 22: About 20,000 clonal rootstocks of walnut plants is ready for plantation in Tral fruit nursery and will be grafted in next season.

The information was given by the Director Horticulture, Kashmir, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat during a visit of the nursery on Tuesday. Bhat was on a tour of Pulwama district to review the progress of various schemes of the department.

He said the rootstocks being produced at the Tral nursery are one of the best quality planting material available.

“The demand for walnut plants is quite high in the Valley and no stone should remain unturned in producing the quality walnut plants,” Bhat said.

At the Tral nursery, the director Horticulture was appraised that at this nursery around 25000 clonal rootstocks is being multiplied which shall augment the availability of plant material. Director Horticulture directed to establish small model high-density orchard which shall serve as a demonstration plot. Director issued instructions for realignment of the electric line which is running in the middle of the nursery.

Later in the day, Director visited CA stores in IGC Lassipora Pulwama and advised the entrepreneurs to help the orchardists by way of providing excellent services and charging reasonable rates.

Director also visited private orchards in Arihal and Peerpora areas of Pulwama District where some effect of scab was reported. Director Horticulture advised the farmers to go for topworking of orchards with superior cultivars for better economic returns of the growers. Director Horticulture also directed the staff to attend duties with dedication.
